Photo analysis

The history of the 20th and 21st centuries cannot be written without pictures. They are equally important sources as texts and other documents. Photographers often take pictures on special occasions or are commissioned with a project. These include politically turbulent times, armed conflicts, or political struggles. Just like sources in the form of text, the resulting photographs make complex statements. Today, organisations and businesses of various kinds, parties, associations, as well as individuals use pictures more than ever to achieve their goals and to draw people’s attention to their concerns. This part of the portal shows that images as ‘fragments of truth’ (Siegfried Kracauer) do not always tell everything; sometimes they conceal things, distort reality, or even tell a lie. Often they contain implicit information. Sometimes they require decoding.
