On 20 August 1938, King Leopold III visited the town of Eupen. On this occasion, many people gathered in the streets. The photographs taken on this occasion are worth a closer look, as the king’s visit took place during a tense period.

Two pictures were taken from very similar angles. Both illustrate that even minimal shifts of the camera can influence the perception of the subject.

In the first picture, the chosen field of view is quite wide. A more distant vanishing point makes the crowd seem less impressive.

In the second shot, the photographer has chosen a narrower frame. This way, the crowd almost fills the whole picture, hence it looks bigger. You can also see more of the Belgian flag, which was moved by the wind here. Furthermore, this photo is sharper and also the better one from a technical point of view.
